Workplace Supervisors - needing support?
We are always looking for your feedback and so we have been looking at the Workplace Supervisors Guide and reviewing it for next year. Only to find when asking for feedback that a number of Supervisors are very stressed, have no time, and are over trying to support their Trainee’s.
This made me start thinking how is it that some Supervisors are finding everything going well and others are not.
"So I found out what’s working"
- Set up a relationship at the beginning.
- Ensure the Trainee has access to everything electronically they need at the Centre e.g. policies and procedures, job descriptions, ECA Code of Ethics etc.
- Set aside a time every fortnight be it 15 or 20 minutes to check in.
- After induction continue to role model behaviours that you want the Trainee to adopt and acknowledge when they do.
- Set up a list of tasks to demonstrate at least 3 times, things like supervision, safety checks, food safety, hand washing etc. ( Ask the trainer for an example of tasks that align with each Module the Trainee is learning)
- Remember its not only children that learn by making mistakes.
- Ask the Trainee what they have learnt not what assessment are they working on.
- Give the Trainee’s acknowledgment often (every week)
- When the Trainee has a question about a Written Assessment or a Workplace Task always the first reply is what are you thinking? And the second reply is have you checked all your learning resources or asked the trainer for an example of what they are looking for in that task?
- Take up some coaching for yourself
